On June 11, the ten Nutrition Finalist Innovations of the Blue Tulip Awards 2020 will give their final pitch to convince the jury why they should be crowned winner. From food ingredient line made from insects to carb-free bread, these Nutrition Finalists will shape our futures.

Carb free bread by Zero Carb Company B.V.

Carb free bread - a disruptive innovation that will permanently change the world-in-food and even positively disrupt our whole attitude towards food. Good food that fits effortlessly into our daily diet without changing our eating habits. High Nutrient Dense Foods are the answer to a healthy and fit life for a broad audience.

CELINE technology by The Sensor Factory

Indoor farming produces food on minimal surfaces and with less dependence on resource compared to traditional agriculture. Production can be increased by improving the irrigation water preparation. This irrigation water is prepared biweekly, based on biweekly lab test. CELINE measures the irrigation water nutrient composition online. The data can directly change the composition to what is needed. This makes the irrigation demanded, fully automated, for more yield with less resources.

One third of all food production is wasted. Think of fruit and vegetables with a different shape or fish that doesn't fit the standard packaging. InStock collect these products in their Food Rescue Center. On their B2B online platform we show what currently needs to be rescued. Chefs order daily, and the next day it's delivered, just like their regular wholesaler. They currently rescue 30.000 kilos per month with around 50 chefs, and every week new restaurants and caterers are joining.


OTFLOW cuts food waste on a global scale. When fruits are sent from diverse time zones, the temperature changes inside the transportation boxes, which lowers the fruit quality. They have developed a product which you place inside the boxes that fixes the air flow and keeps all fruit cool during the long weeks of transit. This product is a floor cover, sort of mat, that is placed under the fruit.

PATS Drones

PATS automates insect control for horticulture. Their solution not only monitors, but also proactively eliminates flying pest insects in air, with bat-like drones. This prevents the spreading of pests throughout the greenhouse and reduces crop damages and losses in a sustainable way, without the use of insecticides. The service offered by PATS is focused on relieving the grower from time consuming and repetitive tasks involved with crop protection.


Protifarm is an Agri-tech scale up riding the wave of an ongoingly increasing demand for more sustainable but nutritious food. In a fully automated breeding and rearing facility, based on vertical farming and distinguishing patented processing techniques, insect larvae are converted into sustainable, high-quality, functional ingredients for the food and potentially nutraceutical industry. They bridge the gap in consumer acceptance by producing recognizable functional ingredients for everyday recipes

The Seaweed Company

Seaweed is the fastest growing biomass on this planet. It absorbs CO2 at a dazzling rate. Seaweed has many valuable applications, such as human food, animal feed, fertilizer and biomass for energy and bioplastics. Currently seaweed is available in small quantities, mainly from wild harvest. Their innovation enables seaweed cultivation and the realization of its many emission free applications at scale.
